1. Site Overview

This site contains curricular information for five biotechnology units, that were developed and offered through Shoreline Biotech Experience (SBE) Kit Loan Program. These units are:

Biomanufacturing

2. Intended Users

The curricula are designed for students in high school but can be used at the college level as well.

3. How to use this site

Explore the modules for the curriculum you are interested in. Each module includes an overview of the unit scenario, curriculum materials, reagent preparation instructions, and supply lists.

Puget Sound-area teachers may be eligible to order supply kits aligned with the curriculum. These kits include reagents, equipment, and other materials, and are available through one of the following sources:

4. SBE History, Origin of Content, & Funding Sources

The biotech kit loan program at Shoreline Community College (SCC) began in the early 2000s when SCC became an Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) site, managing kit loans and teacher training for Washington State educators. The original ABE kits included:

Complete Genetic Engineering Sequence (Labs 1-6)
PTC PCR Lab

In 2017, SCC lost Amgen Foundation funding due to the closure of Amgen’s WA site. The program was renamed the Shoreline Biotech Experience (SBE) and received NSF ATE grant DUE #1700441, supporting the development of two new kits by Dr. Dina Kovarik and Dr. Jan Chalupny:

Influenza Outbreak Investigation
Cancer Biology

A second NSF ATE grant (DUE #2054990) in 2021 funded a fifth kit:

Biomanufacturing kit (developed by Dr. Jan Chalupny)

SBE provided teacher training and lab kits (reagents, consumables, equipment) for all five kits until 2023, when SCC could no longer fund the full program.

Current Status:

SCC now supports only the Biomanufacturing Kit. Some of the other kit components are offered to local teachers through the Science Education Partnership, which is based at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
