Meeting Notes, 10 Feb 2017

Five brave souls at our meeting:   Kira, Amy R, Claire, Samy (new faculty in chemistry) and Judy.

Lightboard

Samy showed us what he's been doing with Lightboard in his lecture recordings.  Here's a sample video he made (and has agreed to share w/you):

Samy built himself a studio in his house where he records this, and is also working on an Innovation grant to develop a studio on campus that anyone could use to record these sorts of lectures.  I would think Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering folks would be particularly interested in this, but also others!

More info:

  • Here's a video from Northwestern about Lightboard.  It shows how you could include PPT slides in your video:

If you are interested in something like this on campus, please contact Samy (aelangovan@shoreline.edu) because he is trying to show faculty interest as part of this grant proposal.

Copyright, etc.

We had a short discussion about fair usage, copyright, open source, etc.   I think we decided that none of us feels really comfortable about what's legal.  For example,

  • If you create a Canvas module and want to post it on Canvas Commons, is it your intellectual property or does someone at the college need to approve that.
  • If you use figures from various textbooks in your lecture video, what's legal?  Can you legally use those from your adopted text?  from other texts, if you cite them?
  • If you link to a YouTube video and it's not a legal copy of an original work, are you liable?

So, we decided it would be good to find someone (on or off campus) to discuss this with us.

Proctoring

Amy shared some handouts for Smarter Proctering, a proctering platform that's within Canvas and about to be launched.  She's looking for a few people who'd like to try this out.

Accessibility

Amy also shared the latest in the Accessibility group's work, including Ally, a program that some folks are going to try that will help to diagnose our Canvas classrooms for accessibility issues.  She also outlined some basic info about closed captioning, and hopes that an aSAP would be funded that will help with additional captioning for videos.
