Using Canvas to flip the classroom with OER (Tyler Wallace, Big Bend CC)

Tyler has students fill out brief surveys after they've finished watching their lecture video at home. The survey consists of three questions:

What was the muddiest point?
Do you have any questions after watching the video?
Rate your understanding of the video content (on a scale of 1 to 10).

Tyler's students turn in their surveys at the beginning of class. The surveys must be returned within the first two minutes of class, and they're worth 2 points (out of a term total of 500).

After he collects the surveys, Tyler hands out a quiz to assess whether or not students actually understood the lecture content. The quiz is also low-stakes (2 points). Students use a think-pair-share technique after they've answered the quiz question, and are allowed to change their answers. Students then self-grade their quizzes: 1 point if they needed help (or got close), 2 points if they got it themselves.

While the students are busy with the quiz activity, Tyler looks through the surveys for common questions and weak points. These data inform how he'll use the rest of his class time.

Tyler's conclusions about flipping: May not increase course success rates, but students feel like they are learning more.
